Misuzu-do, handmade bookbinding

I participated in an event "the 5th Kurumed Gallery:
make beautiful books—a world of hand bookbinding" tonight, held at Kurumed Coffee in Nishi Kokufunji.

Akiko Kamijima, Misuzu-do, is
guest speaker.Tomoaki Kageyama, Kurumed coffee and Kurumed publishing, looks for beauties of handmade bookbinding at this modern era which mass-produced by machine can do pretty much everything. Time has just flew.

Was it around 2004? There was her binding workshop held at
Spiral in Omotesando. She explained a procedure of bookbinding happily with her nice smile as same as before.

She said that there was a time when she decided
"make them here and sell them here like osozai (side dish) shop." It means that customers can see who are making them or how they are made at shop.

It seems to be so natural that Misuzudo, who does handmade bookbinding, and Kurumed coffee, who serves hand dripped coffee and handmade cake and is interested in publishing, are met.

Kamijima-san used to make clothes and said "Clothes have haute couture and ready-made.

I'd like give you a choice of choosing bookbindings."

And one of her goals are "have a cafe [permanently] next to a factory in Nagano." "I'm trying to do better at Misuzudo festival though." Before she ends her comment, Kageyama-san said strongly
with cheering, "Let's do it together, let's do it!"

A salary of book binding is not high. But it also means that the staff So what you and be given, but I was technology [obtained by gain experience. '10, And worked hard in '15 and I think it is possible to once you get the technology, and goodwill, put the work in the small workshop, such places, and I hope when there two one ".

A final question from Kageyama was "Will
handmade bookbinding be survived?" She answered, "We've decided 14 and 15 years ago that we'd do what a machine can not do. That's how rainbow color note was born and [in 2001] MOMA started to sell it at museum shop. Then I thought that someone is watching us and there might be a light ahead."

I guess that the reason why handmade takes so much effort and time is because you are thinking of someone whom you care and you give it to during your production, don't you think?
